Recently I have started to get more miles under my feet as I am planning to move from a 10km distance up to the half marathon. After recently finding out this was only 21km and not the 26km I believed it to be I feel I am in a good place. I have never been a consistent runner, most of my cardio work came in the form of football, badminton, and other sports usually that involve a team element. When I started out doing my first 10km fun run for a local charity one of the most daunting aspects of the training was the solidarity of the training; this is something I would come to thrive on.
When I first began training it was usually short distances of 4-6 kilometres which would take no more than 45 minutes. A perfect amount of time for listening to an audiobook or the occasional podcast. Now that the training distances are increasing so is this time spent in insolation, with training sessions lasting from 50 minutes to over 2 hours and having these sessions 4 times a week it can total over 5 hours of time spent with earphones in pounding the road. The solidarity that I was apprehensive about has now become one of the most important forms of mindfulness I consistently get each week.
This mental boost as well as, the clear physical benefits that come from running consistently, is why I think there is something to be gained from running for everyone regardless of distance, speed, or ability. A year ago there is no way I would of believed that this would be how I viewed running, but having run consistently since I think there is a key reason for this. The simple to learn hard to master nature of running means that it can be personal and people can be as relaxed or regimented with the sport as they choose to get the most out of it for them.
